Dealing Successfully with Negotiations

negotiation Negotiations are integral to any business dealings whether you are an employee or an entrepreneur.And its an universal wish to get the upper hand at the negotiating table.One wishes to have the position of advantage and make more gains.This can be done provided one knows how to make it a win-win situation.Before you start negotiating ensure that it offers an advantage to you.To find out the advantages you  need to first define the goals you need to achieve through the discussions.

Be clear on the compromises you are willing to make.You need to clearly define your core objectives, achieving this should be the primary motive of your negotiations.Plan ahead before entering any negotiations.Do your ground work, gather information,define your objectives and how much you are willing to give and take in the discussion.It is better to present your toughest stand at the beginning and present in a well-defined and logical manner.

It is important to understand what the other party wants and modify your own terms based on this.Most negotiations fail because one or the other sides fail to understand or infer what the other side wants. To avoid this listen carefully to what the other side is saying and clarify what they are offering.At the same time ensure that you get across your point clearly.Any negotiation can be successful provided it is based on trust,this will also ensure better and open communication.This trust has to extend even after signing the agreement because both the parties have to mutually believe that each one will deliver what has been promised.

If you are involved in a business negotiation you cannot just confine your talk to individual views alone,you also need to project your company’s views and demands.You cannot just put your individual views across to the other side.You also need your company's support, trust and resources to succeed.Be prepared to make compromises and concessions to the other side in your negotiations.At the same time be ready with a list of alternatives to counter disagreements from the other side and be prepared with some compromises.For instance, if the other party is quoting a high price, bargain for some benefits like payment installments.

Always have an alternative plan up sleeve before starting any negotiations.If your original proposal does not find acceptance, you can always present the alternative plan.If they still do not agree you can present your plan to another party.this gives you the freedom to walk out of any negotiations if it is not agreeable to you.After the discussions are over and you have reached agreement, re-confirm the terms with the other party verbally and later get a formal written agreement signed.This should also contain the deadline for the different terms of the contract.

Regarding your behavior during the discussion, be calm,cool and collected.Do not display any emotions that indicate excitement, anger or disappointment.Good preparation is half the battle won in any negotiation.Ensure that you know your lines well and the right way to behave.of course all this will come with practice and eventually turn you into a winning negotiator.
